It Started on the Dance Floor at The Midnight Shift

By Equally Wed - Posted on Thursday, June 07, 2018

Serafin Martinez met Thai Loi on 11 April 2009 by chance on the dancefloor of the Midnight Shift bar on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. It was love at first sight and they became a couple within days of their first meeting.

At the time when they first met, Serafin was living in an apartment on Oxford Street, Surry Hills, and Thai was living in an apartment on Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, and in November 2009 the couple bought an apartment in a converted warehouse building on Hutchinson Street, Surry Hills, as a home which they still continue to live in.

Serafin and Thai held their wedding ceremony and reception in their reception hometown of Sydney on the evening of Saturday, 7 April 2018 with 105 guests comprising friends and family members of both Serafin and Thai in order to celebrate the 9th anniversary of their relationship and the start of their 10th year together.

Florals, Cake, Theme

The florals for the wedding were created by "The Grounds Florals by Silva", a floristry business which operates during the day from the room where Serafin and Thai held their wedding ceremony and reception (The Atrium). The guest tables had a simple foliage runner using gum and peppercorn leaves. Red spider orchids were used as a consistent theme on the couples three tier chocolate wedding cake with vanilla bean buttercream, in a vase next to the Wishing Well, in their mothers' bouquets, and for their boutonnieres.

Red is a symbolic colour of luck, happiness and joy in Chinese culture. The Grounds of Alexandria already has lush plantings set in a former industrial precinct with buildings dating from the early 1900s. The Atrium is a Parisian inspired indoor garden atrium with a rustic nursery tone that features wooden tables and bentwood chairs against a backdrop of sage and cream wall panelling, brass finishes and green accents.

Wedding Registry

Serafin and Thai requested no gifts on their wedding invitations, but instead asked their guests to make donations in their Wishing Well to the Brain Foundation (www.brainfoundation.org.au) in memory of Serafin's late father, Fernando Martinez, who passed away in 2003.

Serafin and Thai visited the Head Office of the Brain Foundation in Crows Nest on 24 April 2018 to present a cheque for $8,185 to the Foundations Secretary General, Gerald Edmunds. This represented Serafin and Thai's donation of $5,485 collected in their Wishing Well on their wedding night, plus $2,700 which the wedding guests had donated directly to the Foundation.
