Champagne Jacquart Brut Mosaique
The house of Jacquart produce this wonderfully clean, crowd-pleasing blend of 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. It has notes of lemon, pear, red apple, honey, cinnamon and toasted brioche. Is fresh and supple in flavour, with a gentle, tangy acid line and chalk-mineral mouthfeel and at $55 a bargain.
Bellebonne 2016 Sparkling Rosé
Bellbonne is a new Tasmanian sparkling range from former Jansz sparkling winemaker Nat Fryar. Made from 100% Tasmanian pinot noir, this underlines why she is called the “Queen of Bubbles”. Think strawberry and cream aromas, salmon blush colour and a balance of sweet fruit and complex textures ($65).
Best’s Sparkling Shiraz
This Sparkling Shiraz by Bests is their showcase and one of the better sparkling red wines available and uniquely Australian. A very fragrant nose containing a blend of perennial herbs, exotic spices and cherry. Succulent red fruits tingle in the mouth and lead to a soft savoury finish. ($35)
Billecart-Salmon NV Brut Reserve
Billecart-Salmon is a medium-sized Champagne house founded in 1818 with the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, it is one of the few to remain family owned and is known for the vibrancy and purity of fruit in its NV blends. Also produces a stunning rosé ($75).
Paul Louis Martin NV Grand Cru
This Champagne from the chalky soil of Reims area in Champagne is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and delivers a complex, full flavoured Champagne with a fine notes of dried fruits along with hazelnuts and almonds. Rich and palate covering, this is a boutique style sparkling wine best paired with strong flavours or just on its own. ($50)
Louis Pommery NV England Traditional Method
Vranken-Pommery has become the first of the big Champagne houses to release an English sparkling wine, having launched its debut release from the south coast under its new Louis Pommery label. Made from fruit grown in Hampshire, this is very fresh and lively. It is imported into Australia and is available through Qantas Wines ($99).
Arras Grand Vintage
House of Arras Grand Vintage is at the pinnacle of Australian sparkling wine! The fruit is sourced from the cool climate region of Tasmania where they produce an outstanding wine of incredible complexity and character resulting from extended maturation on yeast lees. ($60). They also make an amazing rosé sparkling ($70)
Egly Ouriet NV Grand Cru Brut Tradition
Fourth-generation vigneron Francis Egly makes Champagnes that are revered through the global wine industry. This is a blend of 70% pinot, 30% chardonnay from three different vintages, released after 51 months on lees to add character and complexity. One of the great “grower” producers, along with along with Selosse and Larmandier-Bernier ($170).
Veuve Clicquot Extra Brut Extra Old
An interesting champagne made only of reserve wines, from the years 1988, 1996, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, chosen for their freshness, generosity and structure. The wines have been aged a minimum of three years in vats, on the lees. Another turn of aging comes in Extra Brut Extra Old bottles, which mature in the cellars for another three years before disgorgement. Impressively intense, with richness and dimension. Ripe stone fruits and delicate yeast can be detected alongside candied citrus, rounded off by toastiness that is always a hallmark of Veuve Clicquot champagnes. ($120)
Taittinger 2007 Comtes de Champagne Blancs de Blanc
A great wine from a terrific Champagne vintage, and favourite with Australian winemakers, too. Made from 100% chardonnay grapes, this aged prestige cuvee boasts fine, delicate bubbles, sweet and sour notes on the palate, along with buttery hints and tremendous length ($300).
Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 2004
A masterpiece from Charles Heidsieck, it is made of a strict selection of no more than 4 grands crus from the Côte des Blancs and one premier cru. Only 5 vintages of this wine have been good enough to make: in 1983, 1985, 1990, 1995 and now 2004.Its rich bouquet offers the aromas of dried and candied fruits with some deep notes of beeswax and nougat. It is expressive on the palate with velvety yet delicate notes of salty caramel and hints of almond milk, complemented by subtle notes of vanilla and cedar wood. ($300)
